Darn them to heck! I've had AKC registered dogs and pure-bred-but-no-papers dogs and Heinz-57 dogs. Believe me when I tell you, they are ALL dogs.
I am surprised AKC even went this far. To tell you the truth, even though I am sure they are motivated solely by $$$, it is a good first step for them, and I can always compare the results for my mix to the purebreds even if AKC does not. I suspect this foothold will evolve into all dogs playing together. I plan to give it a whirl with my BC/Eskie mix Tika and see how it goes.
Steph: Ditto, ditto, ditto, ditto. But AKC's charter really doesn't allow for randomly mixing breeds. Even creating new breeds seems to be frowned upon, although if you can prove that it's a breed over time, they'll gradually take it in.
There's been a long discussion of the anti's and pro's on my club's mailing list.
But what I want to know is--ah ha! another dog named Tika! Where did YOU come up with the name?
So, the whole separate thing is just weird, and very wrong. But, it's hard to complain that akc is doing something to actually acknowledge mixed breed dogs. I know there are arguments it's for money, but whatever the reason, it's a small (very small) step in the right direction. I'm mixed on if I would support it as a mixed breed owner or not (not being one at the moment, it's hard to say how I would respond). Before being WOAD (without agility dog) I was competing in akc for convenience of trial location and dates
